Peter Turnley
(June 22, 1955)
Personal Background: Peter Turnleys personal interests are obviously photography. Peter Turnly has worked in over 90 countries. HIs photography has been published all over the world and he has won many awards. The awards he won include: Overseas Press Club Award for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, multiple awards from World Press Photo, and the University of Missouri’s Pictures of the Year competition. He also teaches photography on streets as well as the photo-essay in Paris, Cuba, New York, Mumbai, Venice, Sicily, and Lisbon. Cool fact: Peter Turnley was a graduate of the University of Michigan.
Style: I would say his style is kind of like the photography that we saw during the great depression. He takes a lot of black and white photography. Some of his works are emotional and most of them are all in black and white. A lot of the photography I saw that was taken during the Great Depression was in black and white. So, that's why I think his style of photography reflects the Great Depression.
Philosophy: Peter Turnley is known for his photography that shows the realities of the human condition. He takes photos of the public in black and white that shows different living conditions. His work shows sad pieces, happy pieces, sweet pieces, and silly pieces. His work reflects different emotions. I feel his work affects the public by giving awareness to all feelings . His photography draws attention to the struggles of those who suffer great hardships or injustice. He also affirms with his vision the many aspects of life that are beautiful.
Influences:Peter Turnly teaches photography on streets. He also teaches photo-essays in Paris, Cuba, New York, Mumbai, Venice, Sicily, and Lisbon. He influences and inspires the people he is teaching and have them want to be more than just a student. His black and white photography is really cool, and I like a lot of his work. I hope some of my black and white photography could look like some of his, and I hope they do.

I used my mom for this picture. As in the picture on the right (by Peter Turnley), my mom's outfit matches the women's outfit. She is standing in the same pose and the women in Peter Turnley's photo. The only difference is the background but everything else is the same.
Again I used my mom for this photo. I would say this photo Peter Turnley took looks pretty close to the photo I took. Again, my mom's outfit matches the women's outfit. She is standing in the same pose as the women in Peter Turnley's photo.
Again I used my mom for this photo. I would say this photo Peter Turnley took looks pretty close to mine, but he is also a dude and my mom is not. You can not really see it, but my mom's outfit looks close to Peter Turnley's. We used an old camera and glasses too.
Art Statment.
My mom was my "model" for this assignment. We both had fun doing this assignment. We had to use a lot of different clothes for it and some of the things we had to look for (like the hat in the first picture). There where amusing times where we had to redo the pictures because they looked funny, but overall we did really well recreating Peter Turnley's photography, and it was a fun time while doing it.
